Emily Ford reaches Cornell and visits with 4th Grade students
Emily Ford, from Duluth, Minnesota, is the first woman (and second person) to attempt a winter through-hike of the Ice Age Trail. She began her journey at the Eastern Terminus on Dec. 28th, and she is on track to complete her hike on Saturday, March 6th. Emily arrived in Cornell on Monday, February 22. She made a stop at the Cornell Elementary School to speak with the 4th grade students. Afterward, she continued hiking. She spent the night at Camp Nawakwa as the guests of the Girl Scouts. Emily has been able to maintain 15-20 miles per day, even through the two weeks of sub-zero weather. Congratulations to Emily on your imminent completion of the trail.
Watch for Upcoming Zoom Meeting on Trail Maintenance Safety
Daniel Watson, the IATA Volunteer Coordinator, normally meets with chapters in person in the spring to discuss updates and information regarding the National Park Service (NSP) Volunteer program for the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Because of Covid, he will be holding those meetings virtually. The Alliance will be hosting two Zoom meetings: Wednesday, March 3rd at 6:00 PM and Friday, March 5th at 1:00 PM. The meetings present the same information, and people are welcome to attend whichever meeting is most convenient for them. All chapter trail volunteers are welcome and encouraged to attend. The meeting is expected to last about 1 hour, including a question and answer session.
I have sent the link in an email to members who are on the Chapter’s list of trail maintenance volunteers. If you are a regular maintenance volunteer, and did not receive a link email, please contact me at chippewamorainechapter@iceagetrail.org
April Trail Maintenance Day - Date Change
When we set the calendar at the Annual Meeting in November, the date for the Spring Trail Clean-up was set for April 17th, the week before the Chippewa 50 race on our chapter trails. However, this trail date coincides with the IATA Annual Conference this year. We will therefore hold our Spring Trail Clean-up on Saturday, April 10th. More information coming in the April Dispatch.
Annual Conference Goes Virtual in 2021
The Ice Age Trail Alliance is holding the Annual Conference online this year from Thursday, April 15th to Saturday, April 17th. Information about the Conference is posted on the Ice Age Trail Alliance website:iceagetrail.org/annual-conference They have listed the session times with colored buttons. If you click on a session time button, you get additional information about what is offered at that time. There is also information on registering for the conference and its sessions.
As part of the Conference, they are holding their auction on-line, as well. The auction will run for a whole week prior to the Annual Conference, closing on Saturday evening. The Alliance is looking for donations of items for the auction. If you have an item for the auction, please send two pictures of the item to Jo Ellerson (joanne@iceagetrail.org). Due to the online format, they are asking that anyone willing to donate items to the silent auction should use this link to send information about their items: https://iceagetrail.z2systems.com/np/clients/iceagetrail/survey.jsp?surveyId=12&
See you on the trail,
