December 2020

Meet Our New Chapter Leadership Team!

New leaders were chosen to take our local chapter forward, and they’ve already begun their duties. Elections were held at our chapter’s Annual Meeting on Monday, Nov. 16. The new leaders are:

  • Chapter Chair/Coordinator: Vicki Christianson
  • Vice Chair: Tony Schuster
  • Vice Chair-Maintenance: Jerry Sazama
  • Secretary: Mary Skalecki
  • Treasurer: Tom Kolb

Vicki has been active with work days, shuttles, and headed up the project to establish Cornell as a Trail Community. She recently developed the local resources for the Mammoth 40 Challenge. She’s been working for several years at hiking the entire Ice Age Trail, and lives in Cornell.

Tony and Jerry need no introduction as they have been active in many aspects of chapter leadership for many years. Jerry has managed the maintenance program for several years, devoting countless hours to it. Tony has been involved in all aspects of chapter activity.

Mary is not new to the chapter either; having participated in all kinds of activity, she will now serve as Secretary.

Tom is another long-time chapter volunteer, and will now bring his talents to bear on the financial records.

The email address for the chapter remains chippewamorainechapter@iceagetrail.org.

Annual Chapter Reports Available

The annual meeting was an opportunity for members to learn about past and future chapter activities, maintenance work, and pass a budget for 2021. Those reports are available at the chapter’s web site, except for the budget which won’t be finalized until 2020 concludes.

  • Report of 2020 Activities, Maintenance and Stewardship Activities, Tool Inventory, and Trail Stewardship Needs for 2021.

Proposed Chapter Events for 2021

The proposed events calendar is conditional on the state of the pandemic and is subject to cancellation and modification in form as needed. The dates are established for your future planning. A final decision has not been made on the snowshoe hike in February.

Ambitious Timber Harvesting Planned Starting in June 2021 in Kim’s Crossing Area

The chapter has been notified that extensive clearcutting in the county forest in the area east of Deer Fly Trail will occur in 2021 and coming years. Vicki Christianson and Jerry Sazama recently toured the area with Chippewa County Forest Manager Matt Hansen and made some recommendations that will reduce the impact on hikers. One notable feature is the decision to retain the forested view shed south of the Kim’s Crossing bench in conformance with required forest stewardship certification requirements. The bench was recently installed to replace the bridge which county crews recently removed to prepare the route for log hauling.

The impacted area extends east from Deer Fly Trail to the Horse Trail.
