Celebrate! 60 IATA Years at Summer Potluck & Chapter Meeting, Mon. July 16
The Mudbrook Bridge is finished, and we’re having a birthday! It must be time for a party, and we’re having one on Monday, July 16, at the Obey Center near New Auburn. It is our annual July chapter meeting and potluck supper all rolled into one. Come by 6 PM with your dish to pass, your own beverage and utensils, and we’ll enjoy each other’s stories about the Mudbrook project and the summer in general. Afterwards we’ll have a short business meeting.
The brats and hotdogs will be awaiting you along with birthday cake, and to help celebrate the anniversary we’ll have some special door prizes from somewhere along the 60 years of the Ice Age Trail Alliance, including some cool youth T-shirts, hats, and the 60th anniversary stoneware mug. Bring along your own retro item to to show off and help us remember the history of this noble endeavor.
Take a look at photos from past chapter July potluck suppers!
Geology of the Ice Age Trail Book is Back!
For those who want to know more about the glacial geology on display all along the Ice Age Trail, the go-to resource has been David Mickelson’s book, Geology of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Sadly, the book has been out of print for over a year and getting a used copy on Amazon would set you back the cost of a glacial erratic. Happily, however, a new printing has been run and we’ve got copies on sale at the IAT Store at the Obey Center. It’s filled with segment-by-segment informative explanations of what you are seeing as you hike the trail throughout its length, including maps, photos, and explanatory drawings. Member price is $28, non-members pay $35.
While you’re there, pick up one of the other items on sale for a gift or for yourself: shirts, hats, totes, mugs, books, hiking sticks, fleece, and pins, stickers, and patches. Help get the word out about the IAT! Hours are 8:30-4, Tuesday - Sunday.
Coming Up in August
As the days begin to shorten and the bugs begin to retreat, August offers some great late-summer opportunities to explore or work on the trail.
- Sunday Hike - Sunday Aug. 5, 1 PM, meet at the Obey Center
- Trail Improvement Day - Saturday, Aug. 18, 9 AM, meet at the Obey Center
- End-of-Summer Family Hike - Wednesday, Aug 29, 6:30-8 PM, Obey Center
Mark your calendars and plan to join one or all of these chapter activities and enjoy the trail before summer is gone!
See you on the trail,
Richard Smith
