Mid-September 2017

Help Improve the Trail on Saturday, Sept. 16

September is a great time to enjoy the trail on Trail Improvement Day, and our next one is planned for Saturday, Sept. 16. We’ll work until mid-day, and there will be refreshments at the end. We’ll continue the work we began last month, repairing tread damage due to water erosion, opening up some views, and making the trail more walkable. No special skills needed, and we’d love to have your participation. It is important for us to wrap this project up so we can prepare for the October Firth Lake project.

Please meet at 8:30 AM at the Obey Interpretive Center. From there we will proceed to the work area. If you can come, please let us know.

Parade of Colors Fall Hike, Saturday, Oct. 7

After a full summer we celebrate the trail in all its glorious fall colors at the annual Parade of Colors Fall Hike on the Ice Age Trail. This year the hike falls on Saturday, Oct. 7. If you haven’t visited the trail this season, you owe it to yourself to experience the trail at its colorful best. Grab a companion, bring the gang, or just come and hike with a new friend. Choose your length from 1 to 6 miles, and chapter volunteers will shuttle you out to your starting point. Refreshments will await you upon your return to the Obey Center, or bring your own picnic lunch to enjoy there.

We always need a full complement of chapter volunteers, from shuttle drivers, registrars, bakers, and servers. If you can help, add your name to our list. We really need your help for this, so don’t wait to sign up!

Firth Lake Area Trail Relocation - MSC Project - Oct. 11-15

Trail builders from around the region will converge for the Firth Lake Trail Relocation Project, Oct. 11-15. There’s a role there for you, regardless of your skill level. Of course we especially need trail workers, but lots of other support roles are also needed, from cooking to registration and more. Get full details and register online for a day or the whole period. Camp sites and all meals are provided to all participants.

It’s Volunteer Hours Accounting Time

If you’ve put in any volunteer hours apart from a scheduled trail improvement day, meeting, or hike, (where you signed in on the clipboard), it is time to get your hours in so they can be tallied. It is important for the trail that your time be fully accounted for, as it means funding from the NPS for our tools, staff, and other important benefits. It works for you, too, because before you know it you’re proudly using or wearing one of the recognition gifts, or enjoying an NPS property with no admission fee. If you are a trail adopter and spent time in your segment, you should have hours to report. Don’t worry about reporting twice if you aren’t sure, we can sort it out. If you need a form to fill in the time on, you can download it here for Excel, or here for Word. The category definitions have changed in the past few years, so check the back of the form for the current definitions. Please email your completed form to chapter@iatchippewa.org. If you still have hours to report for the first three quarters (Oct. 2016 - June 30, 2017), please send them in ASAP. Please send the final report, July through Sept. 30, within the first few days of Oct. 1, unless you know you won’t have any more hours this month (other than what is recorded on a sign-in sheet), in which case just send it in now.

Thanks to everyone for your time and care in completing these reports.
