Ice Age Trail Update
Trail Improvement Day This Saturday
We have a variety of projects on tap for this Saturday, May 17, at our next trail improvement day. Projects include some rock work, some “trail plumbing” and culvert clearing. We’ll meet at 9 AM at the Obey Center at the Chippewa Moraine and likely head over to Deer Fly Trail to work. If you can help and plan to attend, please email the chapter so we can plan accordingly.
Be sure to bring along lunch, water, work gloves, and wear waterproof boots if you have them. The insects will likely be joining us, so plan for your personal defense. Ticks are active!
May Chapter Meeting
Our May chapter meeting will be held at the Chippewa Falls Public Library at 6:30 PM next Monday, May 19. Plan to join us to discuss our summer projects and events. It’s a great way to get involved, or just to find out about the range of projects we engage in. Check it out! We’re usually done by 8, and at this time of year, it’s still light out! (Note that there was a date error in the postcard we mailed out back in March.)
Krank Nature Preserve Gathering
Thanks to the chapter volunteers who assisted in the open house at the Krank Nature Preserve on May 3. A representative group of land trust volunteers from around the state joined us on hikes of the preserve and a buffet afterwards at Brunet Island State Park in a picture-perfect setting. Thanks also to Kevin Thusius of the IATA, who was present for the day, and offered inspiring remarks at the gathering, along with Alison Sazama of the Chippewa County Land Conservancy, and Mike Strigel of Gathering Waters Conservancy.
See a photo story about the event at Gathering Waters Conservancy’s web site.
It’s A Great Time For A Hike!
The spring flowers are just coming out, the ticks are active, and the frogs are really singing up a storm. Maples have flowered, and very small leaves are beginning to appear on the trees and shrubs. The ponds are full! The trail is wet in places, but it’s a great time to take in the Ice Age Trail. There’s loads to see, and the views of the glacial landscape will soon be closing in for the summer. Don’t miss the show!
See you on the trail,
