Chapter Meeting - Monday, March 16
Our March meeting will give us a chance to refocus on our menu of events, hikes, and work projects that await us as warmer weather arrives. We also need to revisit the brush mower question. We have a great program planned for our May meeting (see next item), but this month it is down to business. This time we will meet in the small meeting room in the Chippewa Falls Public Library. It’s upstairs on the mezzanine.
Coming May 18: Mapping A Thousand Mile Walk - A Special Presentation
JoAnn Parks and Dawn Mattot completed the thousand mile Ice Age Trail on June 7, 2008. At our Chapter meeting on Monday, May 18, they will present an illustrated program about their trip. In addition, they will include some bonus information about the maps that make travel on unfamiliar segments a manageable task, and how they have evolved. Mark your calendars and don't miss this special presentation!
First Sunday Hike – Sunday, April 5
It's Spring, and time for our inaugural "First Sunday" hike of the year. Meet up at the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age Center near New Auburn at 1 PM for an afternoon of exploring what early spring has to show us on the trail. Who knows, we may be the first humans to set foot on this section this year! Perhaps some hepatica and other wildflowers will delight us. Bring water and a snack.
Annual Conference is in nearby Merrill this year!
The annual conference is our yearly chance to see trail friends from around the state and meet new ones, check out new sections of trail, learn about what's happening on the trail, learn something new about something very old, and vote on Foundation business. It's a great event, and you'd want to go every year if only it were closer. Well, this year it is! Merrill is a hop, skip, and jump to the east, just north of Wausau. Check out your Mammoth Tales for all the details, or to iceagetrail.org. Registration is due by 3/31/09, but you may want to secure lodging separately. The meetings will take place at the Smith Center on the east side of town.
Read in your Mammoth Tales about the pros and cons on the proposed new name for our organization, which will be voted upon by those in attendance at the Saturday morning Annual Member Meeting.
Outdoor Expo – Sunday, April 26
Our semi-annual opportunity to tell our story to our neighbors to the west comes on Sunday, April 26, this spring's edition of the Outdoor Expo in Minneapolis. We send a small contingent on Sunday (our partner chapters to the north and northwest handle Friday and Saturday) to tell our story, as well as enjoy the show ourselves. Telling others about the trail always ratchets up our own enthusiasm.
Would you like to join the team of trail evangelists? There is a spot for you, and the only requirements are enthusiasm for the trail and willingness to share it! It’s an all-day gig, so plan for that. If you’re interested, contact Richard (firstname.lastname@example.org or 715 967-2164).
First Aid/CPR Class of 2009
Eight chapter members completed the chapter-sponsored Red Cross first aid/cpr training at an all-day class on Saturday, February 28 in Chippewa Falls. Thanks to each of them for contributing the time and interest to learn how to be ready at a trail work day, event, or hike if an incident occurs.
